We’re thrilled to announce that Babul’s Darlington has been crowned Restaurant of the Year for the North East at the 2025 National Curry Awards, held at the House of Lords on Monday, 20th October.
Now in its sixth year, the prestigious awards celebrate excellence in the UK’s curry industry and recognise the incredible contributions of Asian restaurants, takeaways and chefs across the country.
For Babul’s, this award is not only a celebration of outstanding food — it’s a recognition of the passion, teamwork and dedication that go into creating unforgettable dining experiences every single day.
“This award means so much to our team,” said Shuhel Ahmed, Managing Director of Babul’s.
“Our goal has always been to bring people together through food, culture and community. To be recognised at such a respected national level is truly an honour — and it’s a testament to the hard work of everyone in our kitchens, front of house, and behind the scenes.”
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, and several Members of Parliament. Guests celebrated restaurants from every region, showcasing the rich diversity and creativity of Britain’s curry industry.
Babul’s Darlington, located on Skinnergate, stood out for its commitment to quality, innovation and community — values that have long defined the Babul’s brand.
“We’re proud to represent the North East,” added Shuhel. “This is our home — and we’re constantly inspired by the people and the community around us. Thank you to our guests, our team, and everyone who continues to support Babul’s on this journey.”
The Asian catering industry remains one of the UK’s most vibrant and valued sectors, contributing an estimated £5 billion to the economy and employing over 80,000 people nationwide. The National Curry Awards aim to celebrate those who keep the industry thriving and evolving.
This recognition follows a series of recent honours for Babul’s, including SME Business of the Year at the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Awards 2025 — reinforcing the restaurant’s growing reputation for both excellence and impact beyond the plate.
As Babul’s celebrates this incredible achievement, one thing remains the same: a passion for food, family and community — and a commitment to serving the very best of the North East.
